How Often Do You Need to Change Your GMC Oil Filter?

August 15th, 2022 by

An oil filter replacement will be part of a GMC oil change at Serra Buick GMC Champaign, if you need one. We’re looking at just how often an oil filter replacement is necessary.

What Does an Oil Filter Do?

Your engine oil filter is used to help keep contaminants out of your engine oil. This can increase your oil’s life and help you stretch further between each oil change. Your oil filter also helps to keep your engine clean too.

If your oil becomes too dirty, it won’t be able to flow freely in your vehicle, which restricts its efficiency and leaves your engine susceptible to friction and heat. Dirty oil can also begin to wear on your engine’s surface and lead to damage.

How Often Do You Replace it?

Typically, we recommend that you change your oil filter every time you change your engine oil. Generally, this is every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. However, some drivers can go up to 15,000 miles between oil changes if they utilize synthetic oil.

Signs You Need a Replacement Sooner

Keep in mind, while vehicles can go further and further between oil changes, that doesn’t necessarily mean the filter can keep up. It’s important to watch for these warning signs that mean it’s time to replace your filter sooner.

  • Your performance is decreasing and it’s difficult to accelerate
  • Your vehicle may be sputtering and can’t maintain its speed
  • You can hear your engine grinding
  • Your oil pressure gauge is falling
  • You notice a burning smell
  • Your exhaust is black
