Conventional oil is an engine lubricant made directly from crude petroleum extracted from the ground. It has excellent chemical properties for lubricating within the engine’s extreme environment and can maintain its viscosity for thousands of miles, making it an ideal lubricant for many Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models. Conventional oil generally requires change service every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Synthetic motor oil is a more advanced technology that requires more raw materials, processing, and synthetic compounds to produce. It contains unique polymers that improve its performance beyond petroleum-based conventional. It has a smaller molecule that improves its lubrication and additives that extend its life. Synthetic oil needs to be changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
All motor oils will eventually succumb to the extreme heat within the combustion engine and break down. “Breaking down” means that the oil will lose its lubricative property and accumulate contaminants that allow friction and heat to increase.
