GMC Transmission Service

Gearbox, slushbox, or stick? Regardless of type or name, the transmission in your GMC vehicle is one of its most important systems. It requires maintenance just like the engine does, and with GMC transmission service from a dealership like Serra Buick GMC Champaign, you can always be sure your vehicle gives you the performance you deserve.

GMC Transmission Service

Transmission Types and Service Intervals

There are several types of transmissions, but if we simplify matters a bit, each falls into one of three categories. Remember: the maintenance intervals below are a rule of thumb; defer to your owner’s manual, or to your GMC service technician if they spot a problem.

Manual Transmissions

Once the only option for a vehicle transmission, manual transmissions are quite rare today, and haven’t been used in a new Buick model in close to a decade. However, if you own a model that’s equipped with a manual transmission, you should be aware that it requires more frequent inspections and maintenance at a GMC service center, usually at the 30,000 or 60,000 mile mark.

Automatic Transmissions

Besides not having to think about gearshifts, automatic transmissions have another advantage: they’re somewhat lower-maintenance, especially relative to a manual gearbox. Automatic transmission service should take place around 60,000 miles.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

CVTs are a somewhat newer inclusion in cars. They have fewer moving parts, so they’re slightly less prone to wear than either manual or automatic transmissions. They are not maintenance-free, however. Have your CVT inspected every 30,000 miles, and its fluid changed out every 60,000 miles.

Helping Your Transmission Last Longer: Transmission Maintenance Tips

Why does transmission fluid need to be changed? It performs the same lubricating, cooling, and cleaning functions that a GMC oil change does for your car’s engine. Forgetting to change fluids and filters can have similar consequences for your transmission, too.

  • Make sure your transmission fluid isn’t dirty or low; this can lead to friction wear and adhesion
  • Make sure you’re using the right fluid for your transmission; the wrong type can cause severe damage
  • Like engines, transmissions can overheat, or even seize, if neglected\
  • Your transmission should shift smoothly; if it slips, misses gears, or “hunts,” visit us for service
  • You should also visit us if you notice red liquid under your vehicle; that’s transmission fluid, and the leak could severely damage your transmission
  • The wrong fluid or filter will cause damage, too; stick to genuine GMC parts, and take advantage of our GMC service offers to save money
